Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see – to see correctly – and that means a good deal more than merely looking with eye.”
-Kimon Nicolaides

In the first part of the class we saw the Loving Vincent, a fully painted film. The film is about the life of a painter, Vincent Van Gogh depicting the circumstances of his death. The film is in oil painted animation which is a treat to the eyes and it is been created by a team of over 100 painters. The story is of a young man who comes to the last hometown of Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist’s final letter and ends up investigating the artist’s final days.

The film has greatly inspired me as an artist to create something so magical. The film was so engaging that I could not take my eyes off the screen even for a minute. Paintings that were created for each frame had such great facial expressions and the flashbacks which were very well depicted in black and white. Overall the film inspired me to create something like this in future.

“I sometimes think there is nothing so delightful as drawing.”

-Vincent van Gogh

In the second part of the class we had to sketch something out with charcoal pencils using strokes just like in the paintings that were created for the film. Strokes would help in creating various frames for animation. The topic given to us was to create something that reminded us of Our Hometown. It was supposed to be sketched out with strokes using charcoal pencils on a newsprint paper.

I made the sketch of Gateway of India situated in Mumbai. I truly feel that Mumbai welcomes everyone, no matter from where they come from. The Gateway of India reminds me of my hometown Mumbai and it’s welcoming nature. The movie inspired me to depict the sketch with strokes and gradation in them. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of sketching and coming up with such a great drawing.
